Jordy Smith Wins ASP WQS 6-Star O'Neill Cold Water Classic Tasmania
MARRAWAH, Tasmania (Sunday, March 29, 2009) - Durban surfer Jordy Smith has taken out the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star O’Neill Cold Water Classic Tasmania in pumping surf at Bluff Reef in Marrawah, Tasmania, defeating fellow ASP Dream Tour traveler Damien Hobgood (USA) in the final. The win saw Smith take home a prize purse of US$16,000 (approximately R160,000) and 2500 WQS ratings points.
With a solid 8-foot swell and offshore winds, the final was held in near perfect conditions, allowing Smith and Hobgood to show just why they are two of the top ASP World Tour surfers at the moment.
“It was good to get a win,” Smith said at the prize-giving. “It’s been a while. Damo’s been ripping this whole event. I looked up to him as a kid so it’s great to be out there with one of my heroes.”
